Alphabet Commits $15bn for Constructing Artificial Intelligence Data Center in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
India stands as a prime location for data centers due to its affordable data rates and swiftly increasing internet user base.

Google's parent company the Alphabet conglomerate plans to commit fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI data hub in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The facility, that is planned in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a segment of Google's global network of AI centres spread across a dozen nations.

"It's the largest AI facility that we are committing funds to anywhere in the world, excluding the United States of America," the CEO of Google Cloud announced at an gathering in Delhi, the national capital recently, mentioning that the funding will be spread over the next five years.

The announcement comes at a time American President Donald Trump has been urging companies from the United States to prioritise domestic investment.

India's Increasing Significance in AI Computing

The country has become a prime location for AI data centers. The nation's low data costs and quickly expanding digital audience have made it a center for AI and cloud growth for technology leaders.

"The infrastructure will introduce our cutting-edge technology to enterprises and users in the country, speeding up AI development and stimulating expansion throughout the nation," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Specifics of the Project

An official contract to complete the initiative is set to be signed soon, state authorities announced.

"It constitutes a major step forward for the digital progression of our state, progress, and worldwide position," remarked the minister for technology Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.

The project will integrate cloud and AI infrastructure with green energy infrastructure and an enhanced optical fiber network.

The State's Data Hub Strategy

The venture forms part of the local administration's plan to create six gigawatts of data center capability by the year 2029.

Computing facilities are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that companies use to accumulate, handle, retain, and circulate data.

They feature computer servers, memory systems and network equipment like routers and firewalls, in addition to the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.

Funding Benefits

Within the state, the state authorities has been offering subsidised land and energy to draw worldwide funders.

Market Development

The country's computing facility market has developed swiftly in the recent half-decade, exceeding the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 capacity.
