Computer-created images claiming to portray Venezuela's president in custody following his apprehension by the United States have gained many millions of views on social media.
The Way Fake Pictures of Maduro Appeared Within Hours
Initial inauthentic AI image apparently displaying him led off a aircraft surfaced within hours. The picture was not shared any verified American sources; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
We’ve checked the SynthID tool, which found the image was generated or edited with AI tools.
More synthetic visuals were disseminated in the subsequent hours, appearing to show more angles of the leader under guard. Visible watermarks on these pictures show they were posted by an Instagram account called ultravfx.
AI analysis indicates all of these pictures were likewise produced using Google AI.
Authentic Image Posted but Fakes Continued
Donald Trump released the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. However, despite this real photo was made public, synthetic images continued to spread but were updated to include the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Reverse image searches show the new fake images were initially shared on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, SynthID says these further images were created or altered Google AI.
