The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
