Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back reveals that popular personality Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to obtain a strong position in Hell. Rosie, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.
This raises an important query: In what way is this character powerful enough to elevate Alastor over all other Demonic Sinners?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a much bigger story that involves a great deal, leading into the third season,” the creator states. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer could be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long the audience will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the showrunner frequently remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she states holding off on specific information is an important part of keeping season 2’s focus in the right places.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The showrunner assures that the upcoming season will tackle the questions fans have been posing, such as why Rosie commanded Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his influence in Hell.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these humans are making, and everything — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she says.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides a further look into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners looked like as mortals, the second after seeing another character's historical human form in episode 2. She says that a lot of thought went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters hold so much weight,” she says. “They range from looking really different from their demon form to seeming very similar. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion internally between going with a design that represents the personality, versus going with an option that's historically correct. We opted for making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had extended hair like that in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we think the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just thought he looked good. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we design the human versions of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to view additional of the appearances of the human versions.”
