Peak Pizza? Domino's Pizza Chief Executive Steps Down After Pivot Into Fried Chicken.

The boss of Domino's Pizza Group who indicated the United Kingdom might have reached peak pizza while diversifying the chain into chicken products has been replaced after tensions with its directors.

Leadership Transition

Andrew Rennie is departing after a brief tenure in leadership, and will be replaced on an temporary basis by the organization's operations head, Nicola Frampton, while Domino's seeks a permanent CEO.

The outgoing executive, who served at the company for a substantial period, had sought to redirect the UK's biggest pizza takeaway chain towards fried chicken, stating recently there was not “significant expansion” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He observed poultry was the quickest rising protein in the international market.

Governance Tensions

Reports indicate that there was friction between the CEO and the directors over his approach and management style, although Domino's release said he was leaving “as a joint decision”.

New Product Launch

In the autumn, Domino's launched its Chick 'N' Dip brand – which the former chief described as a “bold new chapter” for the company – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and Northern Ireland.

While the company is still planning to expand it across its almost 1,400 stores in 2026 as planned, it views fried chicken as an addition to its main pizza offerings.

Leadership Statement

Ian Bull, the Domino's chair, stated: “Directors think that there are a range of possibilities to drive further growth and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing identifying the ideal CEO to lead the disciplined execution of that growth strategy.”

Industry Challenges

Recently, Domino's, which has millions of users in the UK and Ireland, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it warned that the quick-service industry had “intensified” as it blamed reduced spending in the run-up to the budget and increasing labor expenses for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in interim earnings.

Other pizza operators are also experiencing difficulties. Another major chain announced the shutting of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its outlets entered insolvency.

Wellness Initiatives

Responding to consumer trends towards better nutrition, the company has launched light products, such as its light base range of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as vegan and gluten-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has over 2,300 kcal. A big margherita has 2,171 kcal, while a personal has 909 kcal.

Acting Management

Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and had a background at the gambling company a well-known operator. It is believed that she is not seeking to occupy the CEO position permanently.

She commented: “Our team has a several active expansion and efficiency programs that we will be focused on implementing at pace.”

She said these included further work on the organization's logistics network and new item creation, and its customer retention initiative.

Domino's is also in need of a long-term CFO until March 16, when a new appointee comes aboard from the beverage producer a well-known firm. In the meantime, Richard Snow acts as temporary CFO.
