The former director has maintained his non-guilt concerning the charges

Former FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a legislative process.

Mr Comey's lawyer filed the answer on his behalf in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.

His attorney declared he would seek to have the case terminated for multiple factors including that his client, a opponent of former President Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Mr Fitzgerald advised the court they aimed to submit various petitions to throw out the proceedings before a legal hearing, arguing the prosecution was spiteful and that a government lawyer was wrongfully designated to assume control of the case.

James Comey's proceedings was initially overseen by the original attorney, who resigned under pressure from Donald Trump after his probe into an additional rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Legal Setting

James Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his lawyers and making jokes. He was supported by his partner, Mrs Failor and offspring his daughter, a US lawyer who the Trump administration recently fired.

Following the reading to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, Mr Comey was questioned if he understood the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he informed the proceedings.

Background Context

James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into the former president's initial presidency as president. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

While in office, James Comey caused a backlash from liberal politicians when he declared just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were not filed, resulting in criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys claim James Comey gave untrue statements to Congress during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he deceived the upper house by stating he had not approved an individual at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, block and slow" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording James Comey published to his social media after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and accused Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to opposing the former president," he said. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I am not guilty," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

These allegations against Mr Comey surfaced after Donald Trump published on social media calling for his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge James Comey and others.
