Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial candidates under consideration to succeed the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless beginning to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous links to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club board as they begin the process of appointing a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
