Thunder Launch Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning baskets late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just mere seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a personal-best five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who added 28 points, was instrumental alongside the game's hero.
"Determination and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—shots, missed attempts, good luck or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's championship banner was unveiled at their arena, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in last season's championship series. It was their first title since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to get some payback on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Rockets return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his current team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the road team.
The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer LeBron James as he recovers from a back issue.
