Wonder Man Trailer Unveils Marvel's Most Self-Referential Series To Date
Marvel has heard that audiences could be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've opted to include that very concept into their upcoming superhero show.
Indeed, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a meta twist on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also subtly moved the Wonder Man launch date later from its original end of 2025 slot into January 2026.
Why another superhero film? Everyone is tired of superhero content. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an chance to surprise viewers. To reinvent the whole category of storytelling.
The reporter responds: "Have you given any thought about casting?"
The preview then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his mobile device, and the trailer ends.
What We Know Regarding Wonder Man
We already knew that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series features Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).
The rest of the cast features actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control agent P. Cleary.
Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach
We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's evident that the studio plans to laugh at its own tropes.
In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the studio is all in on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
